About the accommodation: A former prison dating back to 1837, this polished redbrick hotel offers something a little different in beautiful Helsinki. The rooms have been carefully reconstructed from original cell blocks, with plenty of space and natural light. Goes without saying (but here it comes anyway) – there’s a sauna too for all your sweating needs.
Location: Katajanokka is a distinguished neighbourhood full of Jugendstil architecture, sitting on an island east of Helsinki’s main downtown area. The hotel is just 10 mins walk from Helsinki train station, and is super close to the Viking Cruise dock for anyone taking the party boat to/from Stockholm.
Things to do: First up, take the short 5 minute walk to Helsinki cathedral and marvel in its complete beauty. Then head down to the Old Market Hall [Eteläranta], followed by a walk to Kaivopuisto Park. Coffee lovers will appreciate the nearby Johan & Nyström [Kanavaranta 7 C] cafe & roastery.
Why is it on the wishlist? Prison corridors we’d be happy to stroll around, and miles better than a stay at Her Maj’s service.
